Il Divo at the Amman Citadel

Last night, Friday, July 9, about 3000 Ammanis were serenaded by Il Divo, the international quartet of singers of pop ala opera! and other genres. http://www.ildivo.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_Divo

What a truly electrifying performance! as part of the ongoing Jordan Festival. The thrill was to see them live! But the range and power of their voices, either solo or in unison is breathtaking.

The setting was at the ancient Citadel (Al Qalaa) overlooking downtown Amman. It was a warm summer evening, the restored Omayyad hall was the back drop, while the surrounding Seven Hills of Amman twinkled like jewels in the distance. From time to time, almost on command at a crescendo, celebratory fireworks would light the skies over the city. Fireworks are often used to celebrate wedding-- and Fridays often see numbers of these events around the city. All this added to the wonderful and memorable songs of so many languages! The repertoire ranged from A Bridge over Trouble Waters, to operatic songs, and even such familiar songs as My Way, She, sing in a powerful operatic arrangement that enthralled the entire audience.

The seating and stage were well organized with plenty of ushers and well marked seats. The lighting was used in clever ways---sometimes rather than spotting the performer, but totally covering the audience in colors and light. The full house was totally appreciative and enjoyed an excellent rapport with the group.

Il Divo as a unit is the star. Each individual has a unique vocal talent that blends with the others to create their 'sound'.
Here is a simple description of the group:
Simon Cowell conducted a worldwide search for young singers who were willing to embark on the Il Divo project, which lasted two years, from 2001 until December 2003, when the fourth member of Il Divo, American tenor David Miller, was signed. The well-established formation of Il Divo comprises a renowned Spanish baritone, Carlos Marín; two classically trained tenors, Swiss Urs Bühler and American David Miller; and a French pop singer, Sébastien Izambard.

At last, here in Amman, we enjoyed their performance and indeed we will hold Il Divo to their promise to return--it will be to a standing room only reception!
